System envy: 7 DS games I wish were on PSP

Filed under:

I may write about PSP gaming news, but I own and play every system (including the new and next-gen consoles). So while I do get to play most any game I want, I can't help but wish in a feverish state, that certain system exclusives went to other consoles. In this case, if I wanted to list 7 DS games I'd love to see show up on PSP (however unrealistic that may be). So here it is:

  1. New Super Mario Bros (My favorite DS game, but I would like better power ups and more variety. It would also be great to see what the creators could do in 2D with the power of PSP)
  2. SNK vs Capcom Cardfighters (Addictive and strategic gameplay that makes me giddy. Only if it comes to PSP, add back in free-roaming and take out the game killing bug)
  3. Ace Attorney (Great characters, funny cases and it makes you think. That sorta game would work on any system)
  4. Kirby (He may be cute, but the gameplay is classic)
  5. Advance Wars (Because Field Commander is good, but not THIS good)
  6. WarioWare(Because there aren't enough mini-game titles on PSP)
  7. Meteos (Because every Q? Entertainment game should be on PSP)

What about you reader? Are there any DS games you'd like to see on PSP, or do you refuse to even entertain the thought?

European Union tries, fails to agree on roaming rates

Filed under:

For a good percentage of chatters in these parts, roaming is very rarely a concern; modern rate plans have been constructed in such a way that even if you are roaming from time to time, you don't notice -- not even when your bill arrives. For Europeans, though, you can imagine that roaming might suck, seeing how you've got all those countries in pretty tight quarters. The European Union met recently in an effort to agree on caps for international roaming rates (and whether consumers should automatically be moved to the new pricing structures), but -- surprise, surprise -- representatives came away empty-handed. At issue seems to be the fact that the European Parliament wants rates capped at 40 euro cents (about $0.54) per minute for making calls and 15 euro cents (about $0.20) for receiving them, while constituent nations are gunning for something a little higher. Carriers, naturally, don't want hard caps at all, citing the stifling effect they'll allegedly have on infrastructure development, but at any rate, the EU's getting back together on May 2 to have another go at the negotiations. Good luck, guys!

Amosu coats Sony Ericsson W880i in 24 karats of happiness

If you find the thickness of a Vertu positively offensive -- but the Sony Ericsson W880i isn't quite exclusive enough for you -- might we recommend a golden rendition of the same? A phone customization outfit, Amosu, is offering said golden W880i for a mere £569 (about $1135). The catch? Turns out the handset is merely plated in the precious stuff, which means you're really not getting a heck of a lot of gold for the surcharge. Finding a yellow Ai any other way is gonna be a challenge, though, so spend the dinero if you must.

Deal of the Day: system for $140 & cases for cheap

Filed under:

Your eyes do not deceive you: this Sam Goody store is showcasing an even lower price for PSP: $139.99, a mere $10 above Nintendo DS. What gives? Well, it appears this retailer is offering a $30 mail-in rebate. The offer ends Wednesday, which doesn't give deal-seekers too much time to take advantage of this pretty awesome sale. Find store locations here.

For those no interested in picking up a new system, amazon.com is offering some nice deals on PSP cases. Sony's official travel case is going for less than $10, and the popular PlayGear Pocket is going for $13. While I find the hard cases to be too bulky for my tastes, it appears they're considered pretty standard fare by the PSP community.

Game Boy coin purse is as charming as the real system

Filed under:

We don't have much use for a coin purse, since we only carry fat rolls of cash when we roll out in our Fanboy-mobiles, but then, we don't have much use for the original monochrome brick Game Boy either, and we love that to death.

For the low, low price of $30 (which is still more than the Game Boy itself) you can get this cute handmade coin purse. We love the handmade-ness as much as the Game Boy-ness. It makes the whole thing look like a labor of love, which is what gamer crafts are all about!

Motorola Q9h to christen 3’s X-Series on Windows Mobile?

Hutchison 3's flagship "X-Series" platform of data-enabled goodies is missing a pretty critical piece of the puzzle -- Windows Mobile support -- but it now looks like the carrier plans to add it with a bang. Despite seeing a Vodafone-branded unit some time ago, MoDaCo reports that 3 is positioning itself to pick up a period of exclusivity on the upcoming Motorola Q9h (exclusivity which we assume will be limited to the UK, or perhaps Europe) to launch Windows Mobile support for X-Series. Of course, once 3 has bothered to gather all the apps necessary to take X-Series to the Microsoft camp, it only stands to reason that the Q9h will become just the first in a line of Windows Mobile phones to rock it, so if you're on 3 and the Q9h isn't quite your cup of tea (we can't blame you), sit tight.

Gyakutan Saiban 4 impressions

Baller hat, guy.Unfortunately, when we were getting ready to install the tiny chips into our heads to allow us to fluently speak and understand Japanese, we accidentally grabbed the German chips by mistake. Es kann sehr nützlich sein, but it doesn't allow us to play Gyakuten Saiban 4 anytime soon. Luckily, the guys at Siliconera have our backs.

They've run through the Phoenix-less title's first case, and have gotten a fairly good idea of where the series is going. Rest assured, the quality of the plotting seems wholly intact, and the guys are enjoying the fully-integrated DS features (a la case 5 of the localized Phoenix Wright: Attorney at Law). For some more details, check out the full preview. Take that!

Seriously. Take it.

Third party battery promises 15 hours of play — at a cost

Filed under:

For some, PSP simply does not have a long enough battery life. Peripheral manufacturer Blue Raven is trying to offer PSP owners an alternative: the PSP 15-hour extended battery. The battery snaps on to the back of the system, and is supposed to offer "up to 7 times the battery life of the standard PSP battery."

Like so many other battery solutions for PSP, there are a lot of catches with this newly released product. Firstly, it's ugly. Doubling the system size certainly makes the system much less portable. (At least it isn't as ugly as this monstrosity.) Also, we're doubting the true power of the product. Other third-party batteries have made systems explode, or have under-delivered in terms of performance. The standard PSP battery is 1800mAh; to offer 7 times the battery life, this battery would need to rate 12600mAH. Too bad it doesn't--it only offers 4500mAh.

It also doesn't come cheap: $100. We've recommended avoiding third-party batteries time and time again, and we're going to do it again. Honestly, it appears that Sony's official 2200mAh battery is still your best bet.

At last: Professor Layton coming to U.S., per EGM

Filed under:

Now, this is being reported as a rumor, but the mere mention of Level-5's Professor Layton trilogy gets us too excited for words. Since this game was first revealed, with its beautiful character designs and logic puzzles, we've been hoping against hope for an English translation, and Electronic Gaming Monthly intimates that it is probably going to happen.

Now we're going to be chewing our nails down to nubs as we wait for some hint of confirmation. We can't help it. We're adventure junkies, and the Studio Ghibli-esque look of the Professor Layton franchise completely had us at hello. If it all works out, the good Professor may even compete with a certain Ace Attorney for a place in our hearts.

And speaking of hearts -- in that same issue, there are a few other rumors worth mentioning. The first involves whispers of a remade Bonk game for both the DS and the Wii. The other is a little more cryptic: the next Kingdom Hearts will be a spin-off, and it's coming to a "hearty" console. Unless they mean "hearty" as in robust (which would probably indicate the PS3 or the 360), then this could very well refer to the DS, which certainly reaps a hearty profit every month, no matter where you are. And for good measure, it's available in pink. We'll ponder that one once we're done jumping up and down and singing the unofficial "Professor Layton is coming," song, which is really just us chanting that single phrase over and over until someone throws a paperweight at us.

Luckily, we're adept at dodging.

Report shows adults biggest consumers of mobile games

Middle aged gamers for teh win (or something)! The NPD Group is reporting that in an average month, 29 million cell owners play games on their mobile devices and more than 7 million download games -- though there isn't any mention of where they are downloading from. NPD further break this down with 29 percent downloaded by people aged 24 - 34, 27 by the 18 - 24 set, and 15 percent by the youngest group aged 13 - 17. No shocker here -- the oldest group typically has the means, a credit card to shop with, and depending on the career choice, time.
