We're pretty inured to this kind of thing on the Wii, although we still enjoy getting outraged about it now and then. But now we're starting to see last-gen ports on the DS! Sure, we have the Phoenix Wright games already, but they totally get a pass since the ports are new to the US and Europe.
RPGLand reports that Mazes of Fate, the first-person dungeon crawler developed by Argentina's Sabarasa Entertainment, is being prepared for a DS release by publisher Signature Devices and their in-house developer Graffiti Entertainment. Unlike Phoenix Wright, the GBA version of Mazes of Fate did come out in the US-- in December of last year. The DS is a good system for dungeon games, with its map-displaying second screen, and Graffiti is adding new dungeons, characters, and some touch-screen stuff. If you don't already have the game, this is the one to get. Or if you have a DS Lite and you get really embarrassed about the GBA protuberance.

In the midst of everything else -- boy, we didn't think we'd be saying that after the
keynote, at least in regard to the DS! -- bursting out of E3, we almost didn't notice this line on a
release list of upcoming DS games:
Nintendo Magic. Once we did, however, a collective gasp shuddered forth from the DSF staff as we realized that this rather vague name (which, for all we knew, could have been the release of the
money-printer at last) was most likely
Magic Taizen, the magic trainer that we thought might never make it outside Japan. It looks like we're not the
only ones who've reached that conclusion. We can only hope we'll be learning some one-handed cuts and all about pulling rabbits from our clothing this November. DS games are a lot cheaper than buying
magic books!

Amazon has cut the price of
Phoenix Wright: Justice for All, the sequel to everyone's favorite court-based adventure game, bringing it down to $19.99. We don't expect this deal to last for long, so race your shopping cart to the checkout lane as fast as your feet will allow.
If for some reason, God forbid, you haven't played
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney yet and are hesitant to start the series midway through, don't forget that you can also pick up a used copy at GameStop or EB Games for as low as $21.99! We admit, that's still pretty expensive for a game as old as this one, but it's better than paying full price. All you'll need to take advantage of this sorta-bargain is
the coupon we posted earlier this morning.

Joystiq has all of the deets on a new social network launching for the DS from Disney Interactive called Dgamer. The service is to launch with the upcoming
Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and will be included in all Disney titles from there on out. The service, which will allow users to create custom avatars, chat wirelessly and track their friends' progress in Dgamer titles, will also allow users to log in to their account at Disney.com, for further accessibility. The overall package resembles a fairly popular online networking service on another console, wouldn't you say?
The rub lies in the fact that before you can add friends to the network, you still have to exchange friend codes. As if we could get around that ...

Filed under: What are you playing?

With E3 coming to a close, you've no doubt many things to think about this weekend. Upcoming games and
future enjoyment of them is probably on your mind right now, as it is ours. That doesn't mean your, or our, responsibility to enjoy some nice gaming over the weekend can be overlooked, though!
So, we ask: what are you playing? What will you be rocking in your DS this weekend? We've got some
Puzzle Quest to play ourselves, having only given the game a few minutes of our time on its initial purchase.

Last night's Game Night session was less of a Game Night and more of a "sit in chat for awhile before playing a handful of matches" night. It was sad to see, as we were all excited and ready to play
Planet Puzzle League. We guess you guys just don't enjoy the game, or a majority of you weren't able to secure it yet, full of intentions of doing so. Regardless of the
why, we're going to make sure next week is a good night chock full of gaming by only including our top "classic" games into the poll.

We've always thought that
GameStop and
EB Games's used titles were, at the very least, $5 too expensive, especially when you consider the pittance they reward you with for trading in your games, old or new. The thrifty among you will find some solace in this coupon that both companies sent out last night, enticing you to "Save $5 when you buy any used DS game priced $14.99 or higher."
You'll have a better selection picking out your game from the stores' shelves, but the coupon code, "EBC3002763," should also work with online purchases. If you head to their "Used Games" pages now, you might be able to scavenge preplayed titles like
Elite Beat Agents and
Resident Evil: Deadly Silence before the wolves descend upon them and tear their availability from your grip. Check past the post break for the coupon.

Game|Life's Chris Kohler got to live our most recent lifelong dream of playing
Contra 4, and he likes it! (
Hey Mikey!) Upon hearing that
Contra 4 is actually as good as it looks and
doesn't rely on DS gimmickry, we reacted in a manner that is best illustrated by
this video clip.
Kohler cites the classic weapons, the cleverly dual-screen-enhanced level design (which we don't think counts as DS gimmickry) and the
Contra-appropriate sound design as features that contributed to his positive impressions. Oh, and the difficulty. Apparently action games are
hard when you've been at a trade show all day, doing interviews and lugging a bunch of computer equipment around. We hope
Contra will be sufficiently challenging even in more comfortable conditions.
We think we're going to have to find an excuse to
post about Contra 4 every day until more developers get the message that there are plenty of strategy RPG's, sports games, mascot platformers, first-person shooters, puzzle games, and such out there. But there is a huge hole in the market for REAL ACTION GAMES like this one that are about
jumping and
shooting and synthesized guitar, and God knows there's enough of a userbase on the DS to support both awesome run & gun games and whatever else people want to put on there.

It is possible that some of you may be persuaded to buy
Face Training. This is assuming two things: first, that you would like to have a stand, and second, that something other than
Adults' DS Face Training, homebrew or official, will make use of the DS camera. A distant third possibility, that you feel a strong desire to stretch your face at your DS, would supercede the first two. We would
enjoy a
DS Lite stand, and we
hope we'd have a use for the camera, so it's not
inconceivable that we'd consider this a deal worth looking into.
Play Asia is taking preorders for the game at $48.90, which is their normal asking price for a Japanese DS game. That's not too bad for a camera, a stand, and (ahem) miscellaneous bonus content. We hope it's within range for a few
homebrew developers, at least.
Of course, its regular-priced-ness in Japan means that if, by some clerical error,
Adults' DS Face Training somehow came out in the US, it would be regular US price of $30-$35. Don't hold your breath on that one-- although it may be good for your face to puff out your cheeks like you're pretending to hold your breath.

One is all new as of E3, and the other got a great media boost ... and together, they're about as different as DS games can be and still be played by roughly the same groups of people (and also have the potential to be any good at all). So, c'mon, we've
been here before. You know what we're going to
ask. Which one sounds like the game you'd prefer, if you had to choose?
Contra 4 or
Mario Party DS?
